Notes on the New World allopatric beetle genus Mycotrupes (Scarabaeoidea: Geotrupidae) and on Geotrupacarus mycotrupetes (Krantz and Mellott) (Acari: Macrochelidae), an early derivative phoretic mite associate of Mycotrupes gaigei Olson and Hubbell in southeastern United States

The five described species of the flightless, allopatric geotrupid beetle genus Mycotrupes are restricted to deep sand ridges in peninsular Florida and adjacent, elevated hill habitats along juncture Piedmont Atlantic Coastal Plain southern South Carolina Georgia, USA. Based on examination major museum collections all species, it was concluded that Geotrupacarus mycotrupetes, a distinctive, early derivative macrochelid mite phoretic gaigei, does not occur any other four Mycotrupes, nor have been found these beetles, which (like Myco. gaigei) isolated their own ridge or habitats. It also determined Geotrupes egeriei Germar, winged, widely distributed co-occurs with gaigei is strongly attractive G. mycotrupetes laboratory settings, has expanded range beyond Florida.
